Project Overview
Bayhealth needed a visually engaging annual publication that could communicate the accomplishments, leadership and impact of its Nursing and Patient Care Services teams while celebrating the people behind exceptional patient care.
I developed the publication’s creative direction and designed a cohesive editorial system rooted in Bayhealth’s established brand. Layered curves, bold section headers, purposeful color accents and human-centered photography created a modern visual language that felt professional, compassionate and distinctly connected to health care.
The report brought together leadership profiles, team member stories, organizational initiatives, nursing statistics and Magnet-related content. I created flexible layouts that could accommodate dense information while maintaining clarity, visual rhythm and accessibility. Pull quotes, portrait treatments and custom infographics helped transform complex data and long-form content into an engaging narrative.
The cover introduced the theme “Rebirth in Health Care,” featuring Bayhealth’s 2023 Nurse of the Year and establishing a people-first tone for the publication. Throughout the report, the design balanced institutional credibility with authentic storytelling, highlighting nursing leadership, professional development, innovation and the organization’s commitment to its caregiving teams.
Recognition
Winner of the 2023 GDUSA American Graphic Design Award.
Editorial Challenge
The publication brought together clinical achievements, staff profiles, patient-centered stories and institutional information. The design needed to communicate credibility and professional excellence while still feeling personal, appreciative and accessible to nurses, health care leaders and community readers.
Creative Direction
I created an editorial system that balanced Bayhealth’s established brand with a warmer, story-driven tone. Strong portrait photography and clear feature openers gave individual nurses and teams appropriate recognition. Consistent typography, restrained color and generous spacing supported the seriousness of the subject without making the pages feel corporate or impersonal.
Organizing Complex Content
The source material varied considerably in length and structure. I developed flexible page templates for leadership messages, profiles, program highlights and information-rich features. Clear hierarchy helped readers distinguish key accomplishments, quotes and supporting details, while recurring visual elements connected the full publication.
Human-Centered Storytelling
Photography played a central role in presenting nursing excellence as both professional achievement and personal commitment. I paired portraits and workplace imagery with carefully paced copy so that the people behind the work remained visible throughout the publication. The result was a more engaging narrative than a conventional annual or institutional report.
Production and Result
I managed the design through final print production, coordinating typography, image quality, page sequence and technical preparation. The finished publication gave Bayhealth a polished platform for honoring its nursing community and communicating the depth of its programs.
The work was recognized with a 2023 GDUSA American Graphic Design Award, reinforcing the effectiveness of the editorial concept, visual system and final execution.
